Favourite Books of 2017

Sunday 7 January 2018

Hey guys!
I officially did it! I finished my Goodreads Challenge of reading 50 books in 2017 with just three days to spare. I really loved keeping track of what I read during the year, and I will definitely be doing it again in 2018. I love that I can now look back on all the books I've read and what I thought of them. I tend to read so much and so quickly that I forget the titles of half the books I read, so this is a really nice way of keeping track of it!

Most of the books I read in 2017 I would place in the 'fairly good' category- I feel like as I get older I seem to find it much harder to find books that I absolutely adore and can zoom through in an afternoon. However, there were a few absolutely wonderful books that I thought I'd talk you through here.

The first three of these I already talked about in my July Goodreads Update, so feel free to go read that first if you'd like to hear more about them!

The Weird Sisters- Eleanor Brown.
My first book of 2017! Read this one if you love well developed characters, strong family values and an uplifting story.

Burial Rites- Hannah Kent.
Set in Iceland, this story revolves around a young slave who has been accused of murder. Not one for the faint of heart but SUCH a good read!

The Long Way To A Small Angry Planet- Becky Chambers.
This was my absolute favourite book of the year, hands down. I have the sequel sitting on my bedside table ready to go, so BRB while I read the whole thing in 2 hours!

A Game Of Thrones- George R.R Martin.
I had wanted to try this series for a while, as I've watched some of the TV series and I love the plot. However, I don't love the violence quite so much and also can never find the time to watch it (I'm waaay behind, only up to season two!) I'm a much quicker reader than watcher-of-things, so I thought this would be a good way to catch up on the story. I have not been disappointed! I've always been a fan of fantasy and epic novels of this type, and found this to be surprisingly well written. Although I often avoid things that are overly popular out of a certain stubbornness of character, I'm very pleased I put that aside to read this one!

Eve Green- Susan Fletcher.
I picked this one up in an Op Shop in New Zealand for 50 cents, and boy am I glad I did! This book felt like a classic- some elements gave me a distinct To Kill A Mockingbird vibe, whilst some also had me thinking of Of Mice and Men. This book was many things- a coming of age story, a gripping mystery, and a tale of friendships spanning years and ages. It was a well rounded, immersive book that I'd thoroughly recommend!

Honourable mentions go to the Immortals series by Tamora Pierce and the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer- both stories that I have read before, but re-read in 2017 year and definitely still have a piece of my heart reserved for!

What were your favourite books of 2017? What should I read next?
